"They drink Coke, but don’t know who Jesus is." The Christian principles behind Coca-Cola Consolidated

May 23, 2025

Frank Harrison, CEO of Coca-Cola Consolidated, integrates Christian values into one of America’s largest beverage bottling operations. Founded in 1902, the company now distributes over 300 brands to 60 million consumers across 14 states, reaching approximately 20% of the U.S. population.

Harrison represents the fourth generation of his family leading the enterprise. His great-grandfather established the Coca-Cola bottling business in the Carolinas in 1902. The company remains publicly traded yet family-controlled, with fifth-generation members actively involved.

The organization’s stated purpose emphasizes honoring God, serving others, pursuing excellence, and growing profitably. A pivotal moment occurred when a religious leader observed that consumers in remote regions like Sudan drink Coca-Cola without knowing about Christianity. This realization prompted Harrison to leverage the company’s global distribution network to advance Christian teachings.

A ministry born from a bottling network

Harrison and his late son James established Open Eyes, a ministry operating across 18 countries. The initiative equips local Christian leaders to evangelize underserved communities through Bible distribution and humanitarian aid, impacting thousands of lives.

Coca-Cola Consolidated’s T-Factor initiative applies Christian workplace principles. The program trains leaders in ethical decision-making, empowers employees through volunteer opportunities and professional development, and encourages corporate sustainability and community engagement. Over 100 companies have adopted the initiative, affecting 30 million employees across 75 countries.

Chaplains in the workplace

The company partners with Corporate Chaplains of America to provide spiritual support for employees and their families. Chaplains conduct approximately 2,000 annual pastoral visits and facilitate over 5,000 employee care sessions, with over 90% reporting positive experiences.

Harrison emphasizes workplace culture as crucial to Christian revival in America, stating: “Our culture is our purpose. Our purpose is to honor God in all we do.” He encourages employees to undertake meaningful initiatives like mentoring programs and prayer groups.

As of December 2024, Coca-Cola Consolidated achieved an $11.31 billion market capitalization, representing a 65.70% year-over-year increase. Leadership views financial success as reflecting proper stewardship of divinely granted resources.
